Nayam perungayam is very strong in its raw form and should not be eaten as it is. A small piece about the size of a black pepper is enough for cooking. It is usually added to sambar, curries, and tempering for a rich taste and aroma. This is the purest form of asafoetida, so only a little is needed. It is mainly used in cooking and not for home remedies in this form.
Traditionally used to support healthy digestion, relieve gas and bloating, ease constipation, and promote smoother bowel movements. It may also help soothe minor irritation caused by insect bites and provide comfort for abdominal discomfort.
